ABOUT

Arthur Gurwitz is a highly regarded veteran legal industry executive and author with more than three decades of senior leadership experience guiding some of the world’s most respected law firms and professional services organizations. Over the course of his career, Gurwitz has served as CFO of Cleary Gottlieb, executive director of Sullivan & Cromwell, COO of Proskauer Rose and COO of Andersen Tax, now Andersen Consulting. These are among the legal industry’s elite global firms and advisory organizations, and Gurwitz helped guide these multibillion-dollar revenue firms to sustained growth in revenue and profits while further strengthening their already powerful brands.
Throughout his career, Gurwitz has overseen global operations across finance, technology, human resources, business development and administrative functions, working closely with firm chairs, executive committees, practice leaders, office heads and partners. He has been deeply involved in developing innovative and transformative initiatives and priorities, then implementing the tactical tools needed to achieve them. Known for translating high-level strategy into practical execution, he has helped firms modernize operations, strengthen leadership structures and navigate change with clarity and discipline. His work has also reflected a longstanding commitment to community impact and corporate social responsibility, including leadership of Proskauer’s global CSR efforts.
With an MBA and as a CPA, Gurwitz brings deep financial acumen along with a leadership style grounded in sound judgment, integrity, empathy and clear communication. He is widely respected for his understanding of law firm culture and for advising firms, partners and staff with both operational rigor and emotional intelligence. Gurwitz is a recognized expert whom firms and partners trust completely and who operates with ease and credibility within the distinct culture of law firms. His portfolio of high-level, high-value experience informed his eponymous “The Gurwitz Method,” which is now in demand by leading organizations globally more than ever.
In 2013, Gurwitz authored “The Chief Operating Officer: Managing a Law Firm in Challenging Times,” published by Thomson Reuters. The book quickly became a must-read for firms worldwide. In it, he examined both the practice of law and the business of law as increasingly international enterprises, shaped by interconnected and interdependent forces in which societal, geopolitical, economic and climate issues influence the profession alongside traditional business concerns and the evolving role of the chief operating officer. Gurwitz is currently writing another book focused on the radical transformation the legal profession will experience as a result of artificial intelligence and shifting norms within firm culture. “The Fully Formed Lawyer” is scheduled for release in 2026 and is expected to become an important resource for those currently in, or entering, the legal profession.
Outside of work, Gurwitz is an avid reader who enjoys travel and music, often pairing the two to attend concerts around the world, especially when Paul McCartney is performing. He also practices yoga and daily meditation, interests that inform his perspective on resilience, well-being and the human side of sustaining a demanding professional career. Through these daily practices, Gurwitz is keenly aware of how to offer programs and services that help lawyers manage the pressures of a demanding career.
